Learning by Doing: The Pedagogical Philosophy of Our Workshops

In formal schooling, children spend many hours seated at desks absorbing theoretical concepts through textbooks and blackboards. While rigorous reading and writing are essential, many pupils—especially those who struggle with abstract memorization—blossom intellectually the moment they are invited to use their hands, test a physical hypothesis, and build a tangible object in a cooperative group.

At AMICALE LAIQUE SAINTES, our workshops bridge manual intelligence and scientific reasoning. When an eleven-year-old builds a wooden nesting box for Eurasian blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus), they do not merely saw pine boards: they apply geometry to calculate roof angles for rain runoff, use vernier calipers to drill an exact 28-millimeter entrance hole that excludes larger predators, and study the feeding ecology of insectivorous birds in Saintes orchards. Manual craft, mathematics, and biology become a single coherent experience.

How Every Workshop Reinforces Classroom Learning and Civic Pride

None of our workshops operate as isolated entertainment. Every object crafted at 7 Rue Georges Clemenceau serves a collective civic or ecological purpose in Saintes. The wooden nesting boxes built in October and November are installed in January inside public school courtyards and along the Prairie de la Palu park trails, with numbered aluminum tags so children can monitor nesting success in April. The water-quality sensors assembled in our physics lab are taken to the Charente River on Saturdays to record real turbidity data.

Workshop Safety Charter, Tool Stewardship & Cooperative Etiquette

Inside our ground-floor courtyard workshop and upstairs science laboratory at 7 Rue Georges Clemenceau, children learn that manual and scientific freedom goes hand in hand with collective discipline and mutual care. Before touching a coping saw, a soldering iron, a bicycle wrench, or a stereomicroscope, every participant completes a thirty-minute practical safety induction led by our retired craftsmen and science teachers.

Workbenches are organized in pairs of one older adolescent and one younger pupil. This cooperative pairing—inspired by the historical mutual-instruction methods of secular pedagogy—ensures that a thirteen-year-old helps an eight-year-old clamp a wooden board securely, measure millimeter lines accurately, and wear protective safety glasses. At the end of every two-hour session, fifteen minutes are dedicated to collective tool cleaning, sweeping wood shavings for our garden compost bin, and returning every caliper, screwdriver, and magnifying lens to its labeled wall silhouette.

Circular Economy & Zero-Cost Material Sourcing in Saintes

How do we supply timber, brass hardware, optical lenses, bicycle inner tubes, and drawing paper to more than one hundred and forty regular youth participants without charging families a single euro? In addition to our municipal and departmental public educational subsidies, our workshop commission practices rigorous circular resource recovery across Saintes. Untreated pine and oak offcuts are recovered from local joinery workshops; decommissioned bicycles are donated by residents and refurbished in our courtyard shed; glass jars and copper wire are salvaged for physics experiments; and misprinted archival cardstock from local printshops is bound into sketchbooks for our botanical illustration studio. In this way, our ecological workshops model waste reduction and resourcefulness in every detail.
